It's funny how japanese re-write (or depicted) canonical child's fables. Hayao Miyazaki ('Spirited Away', 'Princess Mononoke') made an original version from "The little memaid". It become into a animation masterpiece: Full of beautiful colours, magic and all the things that a good child's story must have.
It's impressive how Miyazaki have the absolute shameless to change all western codes and canonical story (that have a poor adaptation by Disney) to a new world in which seas have eyes and a ginger hair man with stripe suit are worry about ecological enviroment and have a little fish-girl named (by a kid from the surface) "Ponyo" (and she like eat jam!).
This movies make me sad. Don't misunderstand me: I love "Ponyo" like i love "Spirited Away" (and it's too much) But seeing it I fall in a strange mood, like I recognice myself far away to many moment than never come back. Melancholy perhaps... but i don't think so. Maybe I have envy from Miyazaki himself, because he can still play with all this worlds. I don't know...
To tell all the truth i've seen this movie in "noche de reyes" (When the 3 easter kings come to give present for all kids).
