"The structure of science revolutions" by T.S Kuhn

I have finished today this book that I started to read many time before.
It's hard finish a non-fiction book when you have to read other many. Reading become non-lineal; some day read a chapter, look for the information that you only need, jump from a paragraph to another.
When I look back to my month's reads, this looks like I read only 3 or 4 books from start to the end. This is very few qualitatively considering my occupation. Of course this amount don't show the text that I re-read or the texts (or books) which i'm working on, or lonely chapters that I must comment.
So, this is a book that I finished today but I had "read" long ago.

About Science Revolutions I don't have nothing to publish today. I'm working on paradigms and imagination. Maybe a very silly idea, you know.

I envy people like Kuhn. I guess that when Kuhn wrote that book don't feel like he has start a revolution in some way. He cross some ideas from Philosophy, like the Aristolte's system is completely diferrent from Plato's or Spinoza, with the untouchable idea that Science is only teleological progress. And that's great. He found a way to show us a new presentation of the world.

I feel envy, but I didn't know if I envy his genius -that I'll never have, or that their work was recognized.

In any case, this book is essential in so many ways.

"En pocas palabras" byJason

In "En pocas palabras" we can find three stories from Jason "The living and the deads", "You can't get there form Here" and "Tell me something".

Like the others that iI have been read Jason do a perfect job with the images and few (very very few) words. Maybe "The living and the deads" is the one I most like. Maybe because it's a very special zombie story. A very funny one.

Persépolis

All autobiography have some of self-deception. and surely more than the autor would like to recognize. All right, it doesn't matter. This is a great job in all its sides. Forget this is a autobiography and just enjoy.

It's a hard history about our world, not only of Iran.

"Hemingway" byJason

Joyce, Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald are comic-book writers. This is the premise of the story. Brilliant like the others from Jason.

The world were be very different if writers were comic-books makers. Maybe, this time, we don't we talk about "Visual turn"...

"Je vais te montrer quelque chose" byJason

I'd like always to say something intelligent about my post. But I don't have this habilities.

it's, simply, amazing.

i'm in shock about this autor. People like him put the Comic-book in other level. Nobody sane can say that narratives like this are below from cinema or, worst, literature.

"4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile" or"4 months 3 weeks and 2 days"

Romania in Chaucescu empire age. The 80's in the rest of Europe. A girl who wants to abort her pregnancy. Abortion is illegal, of course. Abortion have a penalty which is diferent depend on time of the fetus. But always it means jail penalty. A very loong time in jail. So girls who want to abort have so complicated to do it.

This movie is no about the girl who wants to abort, indeed. It more about his friend, another girl who doing everything to make it possible that she abort. But, did she all this things (really hard things, you know what i mean if you have seen this film) for something like friendship? I don't think so. Religious motifs? No, she didn't. Hence, why? Why are she involved on this situation?

Life is a strange thing. And, sometimes we look us in the mirror face of the others. I don't talk about of "the inefable face of the other" or something from Levinas stuff. I talk about to see you -maybe in a near future or in a posibility horizon- in the another body. Maybe she looks herself in the situation of her friend and think: "Woah! Hopefully I have something on a moment like this to do all this stuff..." (I say it again: Things that only do for a familliar or something and do not for a university roomate.)

This movie is enough ambiguous to please pro or anti-abortion. It's hard for the two sides of this situation. Because abortion its a hard thing for all -specially for the woman who are doing it. Must Roucco Varela believe it soon as possible. And make things for somebody on this situation on is harder when a long time in jail is a true possibility.

A dark movie from a dark age.

Don't see if you're in a bad mood.

By the way, Rouco Varela and his (secret) alter ego...

"I killed Adolf Hitler" byJason

I love people who create new worlds. Norwegian comic writer Jason have impressed me deeply.

My comic-book seller gave me this recommendation. I didn't have read this writer before. And, who i said, It was shocking. Behind this childrish look-like drawings are hidding a deep (existencial) story about love.

When human life don't cost too much and anybody can with total free kill the others, It make the decision of forgiving as a great value.

"Knocked Up"

A film by Apatow's factory (directed by him, in this case).

Fine film like all from Apatow. It's not so funny how it's suposed to be. But, it's ok if you don't have nothing better to do.

By the way, Seth Rogen it's great...

"Weapon-X"

And again I Re-read another one: "Weapon-X" the masterpiece of Barry Windsor-Smith. Pre/post cyberpunk meets mainstream comicbook series.

About men and beast. Logan's ( A.K.A "Wolverine") origin like a bloodbath. Born again like a killer beast, manipulated by a dark agency to be übermench's shadow.

The arrogance of the powerful against the powerless minority. In this case they speak of "mutants" but could have been Jews, blacks or anyone deemed indecent by the defenders below for a better future, always through the pain of others.

A classic.

"Kraven's Last Hunt"

Another re-read: "Kraven's Last Hunt". Maybe the best Spiderman story ever writen. Nothing much to say.

I read this one when a was a little child and sockching me that never again I couldn't see Spiderman (or another super-hero) on the same way.
Grief, pain, and a very inusual history in wich the main caracter is a ridiculous villian that become in an epic and tormented figure: He last struggle with the spider.

Kraven was one of the most silly Spidey villians. DeMattise and Zeck made an re-write incredible of he. One of the first comics that I saw who used so few dialogue (Inner or speech) letting to the picture speak for itself.

Celebritis: Isabel Coixet

It's not so brilliant like others "celebritis" but Joaquin Reyes almost looks like exactly the real Isabel Coixet.

"Transformers"

This night I wanted to see "Pauline on the beach". You know, a tribute to recently dead Eric Rohmer. Unfortunately my media center can not replay the file. So i saw "Transformers"...

It's hard to say but this is the best movie from Michael Bay. All must remember, that he did all this crap too: "Armageddon", "The island", "Bad boys", "Bad boys 2" and, oh! The best one!: "Pearl Harbour". Transformers" is far from a good movie but, indeed, is the best film that he has ever did.

His best work is an adaptation from the transformers cartoons based on a toys serie. in other way, a remake from a remake. The toys creators, Hasbro, made the toys in the early 80's: Then They made the cartoons, comic-book and all the merchandise. It's unbelievable that now in the first decade of the new millenia, Transformers come back in hands of one of the worst moviemakers.

Today I had read a paper from Fernando Broncano who talks about creativity. Thanks to "Transformers" I ask myself: is there creativity in some place of this movie? When Kant talked about reflexive judgemen are he talking about something hide in the very deep inside of "Transformers". I don't believe it, but however made this movie need to know the keys from this kind of cinema. In some way this is remade again the same codes that should be understand perfectly by the audience. They doesn't are inventing the wheel: they only are letting rolling it mountain down. The causality will do the rest.

"Thrist" or "Bakjwi" (Korean Title)

Another Park Chan-Wook ("Oldboy") movie. Her last one "I'm a cyborg but it's ok" seen to me too long and boring, but really cool directed. In some way, I have the same feeling with "Thrist": Almost 2 hours and a half can be too long. However, despite the film length, it's really amazing to see the vampire's mith (again) from an asian filmaker point of view. And it still alive! In a time in wich the vampire is prettier with sunlight, it's great to see again our old vampires: The one who drink blood and couldn't go out when the Sun are up.

It's visually delicious.

"Shenzhen" by Guy Delisle

Another comic by Delisle that I read today. It's from his work in China as animator-in-chief (I don't know if this it is the job name or not) It's less funny than other Delisle works, but amusing indeed.

That's the asian trilogy:

"The Bad Lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans"

Question: Is Nicholas Cage a bad actor? Well, he is indeed. Especially since executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer thought that Cage could be the perfect action hero ever. Movies like "The rock" or "Con Air" (one of the worst film about convicts and airplanes ever made) show us this fact.

But so many years before Cage start his career doing the thing that he best know: overacting! Yeah, and it was greeeat! He is like a living action cartoon. In "Rising arizona" (from Cohen bros.) he's like Woody Woodpecker. Funny and brilliant! All right, Werner Herzog comes back (back to back) with the best Cage in years (If we forget Spike Jonze's "Adaptation") .

"The Bad Lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans" isn't specially brilliant but have impressive highlights between cartoon and a black comedy. The scene with Cage and the old ladies are really really funny thanks to Cage's overacting.

At last a remake that's better than the ferrara's silly original film. Yeah, Harvey Keitel was impressive but the film was long long and boooring.

"Gran Escala"

Thanks to Basurama, I saw this interesting documentary about the crazy spanish' construction development.

It's a really insane. In near future, we must ask us why we let they do all this things.

PD: is it ironic the gospel mensage from mormon's comunity? (Don't say me now that The laters- days Saints have the very well ending for this situation... For Christ sake...Don't be naif.)

"The Twilight Zone: The Movie"

I've seen this movie for the very first time 20 years ago and I love It. I love Segment #3 in which and amazing John Lithgow (You maybe see him in Dexter's 4 season) see a terrible monster who is trying to made an airchrash (based on a Richard Matheson short story).

Like many co-directed movies "The Twilight Zone" it's far to be perfect. Some of its segments are poorer than others. Segment #2 (directed by Spielberg), for instance, it's weak and soft in comparation with segment #3 (Directer by George "Mad Max" Miller). However a movie like this is almost imposible in our time. Reading its full cast and crew we can see the incredible team that became posible this: Spielberg, Richard Matheson, Joe Dante, John Landis (one of my favorite directors, i love "An american werewolf in London"), George Miller, Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks...

Celebritis: Luis Cobos

"Muchachada Nui" is back! Unfortunately, I dont have any traslation for english hearers.

Luis Cobos, demasiada caspa para un solo sujeto...

"Ponyo"

It's funny how japanese re-write (or depicted) canonical child's fables. Hayao Miyazaki ('Spirited Away', 'Princess Mononoke') made an original version from "The little memaid". It become into a animation masterpiece: Full of beautiful colours, magic and all the things that a good child's story must have.

It's impressive how Miyazaki have the absolute shameless to change all western codes and canonical story (that have a poor adaptation by Disney) to a new world in which seas have eyes and a ginger hair man with stripe suit are worry about ecological enviroment and have a little fish-girl named (by a kid from the surface) "Ponyo" (and she like eat jam!).

This movies make me sad. Don't misunderstand me: I love "Ponyo" like i love "Spirited Away" (and it's too much) But seeing it I fall in a strange mood, like I recognice myself far away to many moment than never come back. Melancholy perhaps... but i don't think so. Maybe I have envy from Miyazaki himself, because he can still play with all this worlds. I don't know...

To tell all the truth i've seen this movie in "noche de reyes" (When the 3 easter kings come to give present for all kids).

"Where the wild things are"

Max is playing with his sister's young friends. A snow-ball war. Max run to her rabbit hole to hide. He's happy. He think the young boys are happy too. They are sharing the game. In that moment the camera take a shoot imitating max point of view from the rabbit hole's inside: One of the young boys jump onto the snow made rabbit hole and all fall apart.

Max don't understand when the game become a real war. In what moment his harmless universe become into a real world of pain and suffering... And Max, obviuosly, cry. Cry like the young kid that he really is.

Jonze's movie are inside this escene. Pain and suffering are real, and are here, everywhere. Our rabbit holes fall apart, broken by the heavy weigth of time.

The Rabbit holes it's the image of Alice, of Peter Pan, of the Narnia's chronicles, Spiderwick, etc.: psicological imagining of holding time into a harmelss world where all is posible. Where you are the king (or, in other way, you are the kingmaker).

“Where the wild things are” undestood that worlds like Max's have limited time. There is no utopias. Max have to come back to her mother arms because his world (like and old exausting sun) is going to be overwhelm by time. Monsters allways will stay here, waiting for another king. But the king is growing up, and it's inevitable.

Tim Burton's film lack of this “reality principle”. I think that he really believe that in some near future he'll find his rabbit hole. At last he achieved it making “Alice in wonderland”. Burton dislike me since “Planet of Apes”.

When somebody saw a movie based on a book usually says: “The book is better.” This is the first time than i didn't hear this sentence from any critic. Few (or very few) recognize that he/she read the book, 'cause it's a child's book. or, in other way, looks like did't have any sense make a question like: Who's better? because a child's book can't categorize into this statements.

Yes, this is an adaptation, a very good adaptation, indeed.

'Burma Chronicles' by Guy Delisle

Complete review here.

'El milagro de P. Tinto'

I've seen this movie so many times. I love Fesser's first movie. Maybe this one must be at the top 10 of the spanish movies ever.
The world that create Fesser and his crew are, in one word, amazing. Like movies of Jean-Pierre Jeunet movies ('Amelie' 'Delicatessen'), 'P. Tinto' is a wonderful world itself, close and almost perfect.

'Las Ciudades Invisibles' by Italo Calvino

Beauty, sad and so good damn write.

Avatar

I love 'Aliens', I love 'Terminator', even I almost love 'Abyss'. So I think that I love Cameron. 'Avatar' tell us the most know story ever, but it's really amazing. 3D amazing, of course.

I went to the cinema with my very old father.

This was (is) a cold, cold winter.

Iron Man

It's my second view, and I enjoyed it more than the first.

'Folk Psychological Narratives' Daniel D. Hutto

In what development state we start to be rational? are the narrative structures (like mythos) behind our mental architecture?

El giro visual ('Visual Turn') by Fernando R. de la Flor.

[Picture are from "Imago" another De La Flor's non-fiction book.]

A great reflexion about aesthetic (and other areas). His central point is the so-called "visual studies" (or visual culture).

Zombieland

Promotion says: "Shaun of the Dead meet Superbad." In some point they are right. it's not brillant like "Shaun.." but, yeah, enought interesting to see to the end. And incredily funny!

My first movie of the year. Happy 2010.

Another Artur C. Clarke's Year (second Odyssey)
